Keeping a soul journal inspires us to record signs, clues, and answers that we might otherwise overlook or eventually forget.

What are the first thoughts that run through your mind when you wake up in the morning?

What are the details of the dream that left an impression on you and that still kind of lingers in your mind?

What ran through your mind when you saw those same repeating numbers...once again?

Everything that “stops us in our tracks,” even if just for a few short minutes, should be written down, drawn out, or symbolized in some way, shape, or form.

We could visit a psychic or enlist the help of a guru or hypnotherapist; yet, the information transmitted or received will not be as pure or as clear as what we record in our journal.

In this age of technology and all its distractions, we often disconnect and lose sight of what is real. We may be going to school, furthering our education or succeeding in our job or career. However, if we are not operating from our higher self, we can lose touch with what is truly us, as well as with what is truly (meant) for us, and we could begin to feel lost. Connecting with our soul (or higher inner self) is the only way to find the clarity we seek and get things back on track.

“When we devote no time to the inner life, we lose the habit of soul... The deeper questions about who we are and what we are here for visit us less and less. If we allow time for soul, we will come to sense its dark and luminous depth. If we fail to acquaint ourselves with soul, we will remain strangers in our own lives.”—John O’Donohue in ‘Anam Cara’

When I say “journaling” I don’t just mean writing. I mean everything from sketching to collage to writing short phrases or, sometimes, even just a number or a word.

Don’t let a blank page stop you.

There is no ‘right’ way to journal. It’s about experimenting with different medias until we find those that work for us.

Keeping a journal is a way of entering into ‘conversation’ with our soul. We can start by finding or, better yet, creating one or more visual images that capture something of the nature of our soul as we feel it.

For those of us who are presently nesting in winter, now is a great time to start, because when Mother Earth begins to gently drop into herself, so do we. A part of us unconsciously descends into our deeper chambers bringing us closer to our self.

Putting together images, symbols, pieces of writing, or music that speaks to us from our soul creates a safe and sacred space where we can freely express communication between our conscious, and our higher, self. Nowhere are we safer, or more in tune, than in our own sacred energy.
