Spending Christmas alone?

Today, as I continue to prepare for the holidays, I’m thinking about those who are away from loved ones.

For most people Christmas is something to look forward to, a time for celebration and magic. But, for others, the festive period can be filled with loneliness, longing, and grief.

The reality is that lots of people spend Christmas alone or apart from loved ones every year, for all sorts of reasons.

Putting myself in their place, I took some time today to think about what I would do if ever I find myself alone...

“I will honour Christmas in my heart.” ~Charles Dickens

Even if celebrating on my own, I know it would be important to me to be in comfortable christmassy surroundings. So, much like I’m doing now, the first thing I would do is start a few days in advance and take the time to declutter. In the spirit of out with the old and in with the new, I’d shred papers and give away what I no longer need. Then, with a clean pallet, I would decorate my house just for me and be ready to start the new year clean.

I think I’d celebrate with rest and relaxation and stay in comfy Christmas pjs all day.

I’d write a little and read.

I’d also line up something inspiring to watch on TV, like BBC’s “Victorian Christmas.” It may be difficult for us to imagine, but, at the beginning of 19th century England, Christmas wasn’t widely celebrated. Many businesses didn’t even consider it a holiday...

I would make sure to have the food I’d want to eat for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Knowing me, I’d probably make the rest and relaxation theme a three-day event. Hopefully, it would be snowy enough outside to bring in that added feeling of warmth...

I’d reach out to others who might also be alone and chat a little online…

However, most of all, I would meditate in Christ conscious energy and express my gratitude for knowing that we are never alone.

Blessings and love,

Mary
